London-based Doshi Levien bring their flair for the unconventional to this playful commission for Denmark’s Kvadrat.
August 20th, 2013
Together, Jonathan Levien and Nipa Doshi have created ‘The Wool Parade’, a 12 piece installation of upholstered objects, hung randomly, citing their inspiration as avant-garde parties and architectural theatre costumes of the early Bauhaus.
Each of the geometric objects is designed to highlight wool’s inherent, natural characteristics, its durability and functionality. Kvadrat wanted to express how wool is a material that ages gracefully and is easily maintained.
The vibrant installation, distinctive of Doshi Levien’s playful, broader portfolio, takes wool ( often overlooked as a contemporary fabric) and re-introduces it in a different light. The complexity of each object’s shape and form serving to demonstrate the stretch capabilities and versatility of the material.
The Wool Parade currently hangs in Sydney, Australia, until August 26th before it continues its world tour.
