Design heavyweights Steve Leung and Kelly Hoppen join forces to create four showflats inspired by the world’s greatest metropolises for a luxury housing project in Shenzhen. Rik Glauert reports.

Shenzhen’s latest luxury development promises to up the ante on refined living. The One Shenzhen Bay development sits on prime real estate, with extensive views over the city and lavish interiors.

The development itself is the work of Shenzhen Parkland Real Estate Development Co., Ltd, with four showflats designed by British designer Kelly Hoppen. Hong Kong architect and interior designer Steve Leung’s design collaboration platform Steve Leung Exchange (SLX) enlisted her help to create the showhomes, which demonstrate the blueprint for each of the apartments on offer at One Shenzhen Bay.

“It is a complete delight for me to be working with Steve and the SLX team on this project and we are greatly encouraged by the success of this collaboration,” says Hoppen.

This new venture deploys her iconic design philosophy of sleek and crisp lines and introduces a subtle yet compelling fusion of both Eastern and Western details. Working with Leung, Hoppen looked to the great metropolises of the world for inspiration, with each of the four flats reflecting the style and lifestyle of one of four capital cities: Hong Kong, London, Paris and New York.

For Steve Leung, the Hong Kong-themed design “illustrates the idea of contrast, like a Chinese mountainous landscape juxtaposed with a modern cityscape.” To complete this feel, the space blends raw elements of wood, marble and flowers with modern synthetic finishes that emanate Hong Kong’s iconic skyline.

In the Paris-inspired apartment, visitors can expect all the beauty of Parisian chic, with touches of brass and gold, exquisitely painted walls and marble bathrooms. Hoppen and Leung have ensured its elegance with a number of references to revered Paris fashion houses, including Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Celine.

Architectural references take centre-stage in the apartment inspired by New York. The space “recreates the eclectic vibe of the global city’s cultural and architectural influences,” says Leung. This apartment features a sleek, modern living room, with linear forms in fresh white. Pops of colour come in here and there: a rich, red wine hue lines one wall in the living area, while elements of yellow and turquoise find their way into a bedroom. Statement-making furniture, such as the curving black armchairs by the cabinets and red wall, add a bold touch.

The London-inspired flat emanates the classical and heritage elements of the UK city. Expect rich greys and soft rose hues, lavish vintage furniture and some statement pendant lighting.

“I prefer minimal, elegant, and functional designs, which incorporate unique cultural and arts elements, relevant to each particular project,” says Leung. It looks like One Shenzhen Bay is a perfect fit.
