The newly opened mall at Shanghai ICC draws on the rich texture of the city’s design fabric.
January 8th, 2014
Designed by Benoy, iAPM Mall is a seven-storey retail podium at Shanghai ICC, a mixed-use development that includes two Grade A office towers and a luxury residential tower.
Prominently located on Huai Hai Zhong Road, right in the heart of the bustling Puxi commercial and retail district, iAPM Mall is inspired by the site’s French concession heritage and combines traditional Shikumen architecture with contemporary design. An example can be found in the podium’s frontage, which references the proportions and design of elegant Shikumen buildings, resulting in striking double-height shop fronts.
The design respects its surrounding environment, drawing inspiration from the district’s famous shop-lined and wide pedestrian streets. The striking stepped terraces on the podium levels are the result of this influence, with the designers transferring the dimensions and leafy ambience of the streets to the building’s upper floors.
Three glass dining ‘boxes’ protrude from the building, offering great views of the city, while inside, pop-out retail boxes at the main entrance add to the retail experience.
The Gold LEED certified mall also features media walls and vertical gardens, and utilises mainly local materials, all of which have been chosen with sustainability and quality in mind.
