The Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016 consists of 18 submission categories. Within the Interior design category, three entries were awarded the Best of the Best accolade – all of which were designed by Asian firms. One of these is the A’tolan House by Arthur Ho of Taiwan-based Create + Think Design Studio. The A’tolan House refers to “a house made out of rocks”, translated from the indigenous language of natives living in the east coast of Taiwan. Rightfully so, the house was constructed using a local architectural technique. Rocks were excavated from the site to build walls spanning three storeys, much like rice patty terraces.

Another project honoured in the Interior Design category is the Blue Lake House by the Beijing Fenghemuchen Space Design Center. Inspired by its surrounding environment, the Blue Lake House features tall metal structures in the shape of trees. The structures raise the roof of the main space to a 5.8-metre height, in contrast to the external walls, forming a floating vision, while enabling natural light to fill the space. The third winning entry in Interior Design is Bright, Open Space, a residential interior by Taichung-based studio Tienfun Interior Planning.

The jury this year was visibly larger than before, comprising 41 individuals including freelance designers, design professors and specialised journalists. Indesign Media’s CEO and Publisher Raj Nandan was part of this year’s jury alongside the inventor of the USB flash drive, Hideshi Hamaguchi and product designer Kristiina Lassus.

The stringent judging process remained consistent. Jurors came together in the Ruhr district in Germany for several days to physically experience or engage in discussions regarding the entries.
