“To design and build a better world,” that is the principle of Herman Miller’s Design for You campaign, which previously ran in the United States, China, Japan, and now in Hong Kong. Titled SO Hong Kong – Design for You, the campaign revolves around the theme “beautiful Hong Kong”, in dedication to the city’s unique cultural offerings. Through the campaign, Herman Miller aims to encourage locals to ponder about their living environment and what it means to reside in Hong Kong.
Continuing its support and promotion of art and creativity, Herman Miller invited emerging local artist Vivian Ho and art group Graphic Airlines to create exclusive designs as part of the campaign, a nod to Herman Miller’s history, which charts highly successful collaborations with late artists such as Alexander Girard, Isamu Noguchi and Robert Propst, to name a few.
When designing their pieces, Vivian Ho and Graphic Airlines took inspiration from Hong Kong’s culture, environment and values.
Born in the 1990s, Vivian Ho has expressed her vision of Hong Kong by highlighting the city’s diverse culture. The front of her hand-painted chair features a new-age, Western-influenced Fortune Cat that has been decorated with visuals of the popular local snack, egg tart, while the back of the chair features a design inspired by the traditional details of Hong Kong, such as aged flooring tile patterns from tenement buildings, which was combined with a pawn shop sign – a tribute to Hong Kong’s charming streets.
Graphic Airlines, made up of creative duo Tat and Vi, have painted Hong Kong’s national flower, Bauhinia blakeana (Orchid). Their hope is to highlight the beauty of Hong Kong within people’s homes.
